The Prime Bahama Angels topped the Ports International Phillies in game one of the Rookie Division Championship Series on Saturday, 20-10. The Angels scored seven runs in a second inning that was highlighted by two 3-run homerun blasts by Angels Jonathan Key and Andre Ferguson, their first home runs of the season. 6

The Angels followed up this offensive onslaught with outstanding defense by Spencer Andrews at third base. Andrews kept the Phillies at bay by scooping up hard hit balls down the third base line and making the long throw to first base for at least five of the Angels’ 12 outs of the game.

The Phillies came out of the gate strong in the first inning, scoring five runs on hits by Tavis Simms, Aidan Adams, Sean Wrinkle, Jack Makin, Luke Pyfrom, and Emma Workman. But the Angels followed with six runs in the bottom of the first to end the inning, 6-5. 12

Both Andres Arenas and Mikhael Bethel registered hits in the second. Glen Ritchie brought Arenas and Bethel home with a hard-hit triple, to make the score 7-6. Ritchie also scored to up the Phillies lead in the top of the second to 8-6. But the Angels went on a scoring rampage with two 3-run homers. The inning ended with the Angels leading 13-8.

Aidan Adams pulled a line drive hit out of the air from the pitcher’s position to highlight Phillies defense in the third. Oliver Euteneuer and Tavis Simms both scored for the Phillies in the third inning on RBI hits by Emma Workman and Jack Makin. But that would be all the Phillies could manage, as the Angels went on to score three more and up their lead to 16-10 going into the fourth inning.

Three up and three down in the top of the fourth proved to be the final stroke for the Phillies, as the Angels went on to score four more runs and win the game by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule.

The second game of this series will be on Saturday, May 27th at 1:00 pm.
